January 2006 - Jet Sprints

Ian Ferguson suggested he may will be at the Nationals at Lake
Kaniere in a return to circuit racing
The Jet Sprints were an interesting day out but a rather small crowd must
have disappointed the Organizers. Its a Pity as there was plenty of Action
on the Day. I put up a few Images for you to enjoy

Summer Wine's Geoff Robinson has had a Successful Test session on the
weekend and has entered the U.I.M World 2.5 Modified Hydroplane Championships

January 2006 - Manawatu Gold Cup

Steve Hughes File Photo
Unofficially The Goldcup was won today by Steve Hughes in Total from
Julian Stillwell in Resene, I assume they are still the same names on
the Boats.
This may well make Steve hughes one of the winningest Drivers on the
Goldcup List.
Tony Hall got "Tempest" firering to win the Ross Knight Memorial
Steve Mathieson
won the The Carl Augustine Challenge on Saturday so overall it seems
Honors were shared amongst all and hopefully the Manawatu Club had a
Successful Meeting
There was an Incident involving John Hallet in Buckshot and Scott Dennis
in Velocity with a coming together hopefully both Boats will be ok.
Look for a
detailed Official Report soon on the New

January 2006 - Manawatu Goldcup 2006

Two old Hydro's returned to the water after a few years break "Hang On
II" and "Miss Riff Raff"
The rest of the day had a few minor incidents and one crash where "Miss
Weta" ran into the back of "Maximum Boost" causing some damage to both
Boats. series 3000 was very strong at this meeting with 11 boats featuring.
Formula
3 had 6 Boats although "Disturbed" didn't get any races in on
the day.
"Instigator" had a problem on the ramp during the start of the final heat
of the North Island championships and this gave the Title to Scott Dennis
in "Velocity" Modified Hydroplanes were strong in numbers but hard luck
story must be Daniel Pollack in "Undertaker" who suffered another hole
in his boat this time in the bottom of the right Sponson. Just the one
Formula One Boat on the day being Julien Stillwell "Resene"
Sundays Racing should be good with many boats returning and some newcomers
like Tony Hall in "Tempest"
I wont be there though as Wanganui has Jet Sprinting on, I will try to
sort a Gallery at a later date until then here's a few images

January 2006 - Manawatu Gold Cup

Jamie Knight took to the water this morning in "Hang On II" his first time back in a Grand National Hydroplane for a number of Years.
Things started off quite nicely in testing and during a break to retrieve
Terry Mathieson and "Meridian" from the trees(just a few scratches) he
decided he would have one more test before resting the Boat for the big
races tomorrow. It was during this Test that things went wrong with the
Engine letting go, possibly due to one of the sleeves being at fault.

A large number of bits of internals were retrieved from the bottom of
the boat and this makes Jamie's participation at next weekends Downtown
Wanganui event doubtful.
Jamie had plenty to say about the incident sadly none of it can be repeated here.
He
suggested Bugger would be apt after I told him I had already put up the
pictures during Lunch

The Annihilator Team once more thrilled the crowds in two races the second
race of the day only featured Ken & Warwick as David's crew had not completed
their engine change in time, They will need to step up there times and
priorities if they need to change engines between heats at the upcoming
World Championships.
The Third and final run of the day saw all 3 boats run hard and successfully
and while the day was not about results Ken Lupton was at his best running
out in front.
I will post Pictures later tonight after refreshments....Hopefully

The Annihilator Team thrilled the crowds in the first demonstration run at the Freestyle Sports Open this Morning.
Large numbers of spectators rushed down from the Extreme Motorbikes Display when the 3 boats took off to start there 4 lap race.
The race was not without its dramas however as David pulled up Annihilator
2 with a Vibration and in the final Lap Ken Lupton Developed a major Oil
Leak which created excitement with a plume of Oil Smoke pouring out from
under the engine cowling.
I will have another report later in the day and post more Pictures later

January 2006 - Geyserland Regatta

Wasted Knights gets a little wild in front of Buckshot
There was plenty of close racing at Mangakino in the opening meeting of
the New Zealand Powerboat calendar in the North Island.
About 28 Boats showed up to race on Day 0ne with the Modified Hydro's
and Series 3000 having the largest fields with 9 boats each. Both classes
provided close racing with the handicap races producing some close finishes.
Race 3 for the Modified Hydroplanes was the standout race of the Day with
two exciting 3 boat race battles.
The Modified Hydro's were all using the weekend to shake the cobwebs out
in preparation for the UIM 2006 Modified Hydroplane World Championships
held at Lake Karapiro on 4th & 5th February. All the boats survived the
day with no mechanical breakdowns although "Little Cracker" and "Undertaker"
both suffered minor hull damage due to the sometimes rough water.
"Undertaker" was vastly improved from last years debut season and looked
really good. Another Modified Hydroplane to stand out was New Driver Alan
Wells who purchased the old Avalanche Boat and renamed it "Bugga" it ran
well and he just needs one more official race to earn his full licence.
5 Formula One boats were joined by a Mod VP "Anti Cyclone". Its a shame
that all the Mod VP Boats don't show up at the same meetings there's more
than enough to run a full field but in my time I have never seen more
than two at the same race meeting together.
F1 Boat "Patriot" walked away with Race one but caused major damage to
his engine and had to retire from the rest of the meeting. Peter Thomas
had a new boat called "The Advocate" and still has "Twister" for sale.
"Resene" made a welcome return to racing and joined "Sierra" and New Zealand
Champion "California Girls" in racing.
Formula 3 was dominated by "Instigator" although the returning "Velocity"
kept him honest all day. "Dupont" really looked the part and its a real
credit to the team to build a great looking Boat. "Too Keane", "Strike
Zone" & "Wild Thing" rounded out the fields and provided good racing.
Racing
for Day two on the 2nd of January had to be called off at Lunch Time due
to High Winds making the course too rough. This was a disappointment for
"Sultan" who was only available to race that day, a small test
run in rough conditions was enough to know that the boat still runs ok.
Hardest
Luck of the weekend however must be Jason Buttimore and "Megabucks"
they suffered a major breakdown on the Tow vehicle on the way to the meeting
and didn't arrive until the close of action on day one. To top that all
off the Boats Fuel Pump refused to work and they could not fire up the
boat.
I will have a Gallery Page up Soon.
2nd January 2006 - Fair Warning

Scott & Selwyn Coker and the "Fair Warning" Team have been very Busy over
the last few months Rebuilding the Boat into a fully fledged contender
for the upcoming UIM 2006 World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships.
As the Picture shows a fully enclosed Cockpit has been built into the
Boat and the Engine has had the Magic touch of Selwyn Coker with additional
Horsepower. The "Fair Warning" Team is sure to loom as a real Dark Horse Contender for the Championship.

2005 - Darren Penington Article in Pakenham Berwick Gazette

Forget jet-skis, knee-boards, and please remember to leave the wake-board
at home. This is the perspective of speed-demon Darren Penington, who
prefers 165 kilometre an hour thrills on the water, with just a few
centimetres of thin timber separating his tightly harnessed body from
the glass-like surface he races on. The 23-year-old from Drouin has
raced at ridiculous speeds since he was 17, and loved every second of
it. Darren grew up in Alambee, near Mirboo North and is Australia's
number one hydroplane racer, a hotly contested title he has managed
to hold for the past three years. Also the reigning Victorian champion,
Darren is off to New Zealand early next year to contest the Hydroplane
World Championship on Lake Karapiro, where the world's best boat racers
will meet, all focused on winning. As a child, Darren remembers the
days of playing football and tennis, while watching his dad, Tony, rocket
across lakes throughout Victoria, fearless, with a definitive 'pedal
to the metal' attitude. It did not take Darren long to realise that
skimming across water at frantic speeds was a sport he would grow to
love. Tossing up between go-karts and boat racing, top-end speed soon
became a consideration, and Darren's need for speed turned his attention
to the sport that combined powerful petrol engines with the unpredictable
environment of water. His $20,000 1.6 litre twin cam boat won Darren
the rookie of the year award in 1999, and since then a string of back-to-back
national and state titles. Amongst his hoard of trophies Darren has
collected the Ron Wilkins Memorial Cup, considered the sport's most
prestigious. But despite his winning ways in Australia, Darren admits
his quest for glory in New Zealand won't be an easy task. "The biggest
factor is I won't be driving my own boat, that changes things quite
a bit," he said. The boat will not only be different, but considerably
more powerful than the boat Darren has raced for the past six years.
"The boat waiting for me in New Zealand is a 2.5 litre, quad-cam V6.

"The difference in power will be noticeable, but I think after spending
a couple of days getting used to the boat before the competition will
bring me up to speed quickly," Darren said. Darren said despite being
on top of the competition in Australia, he expects some fierce competition
when he races off across the Tasman. "The secret is having the guts
to drive the boat flat out through each of the corners. "No braking
at all, flat out down the straight then pedal to the metal turning through
the corners. "It's not easy to do, it takes a long time to get used
to," Darren said. Like every sport, hydroplane racing is not without
accidents, and Darren can vividly recall a number of hair-raising incidents.
"I've had a couple of close calls, ran up banks and once caught on fire,"
he said. With flames bursting from the engine bay of his boat, It took
Darren over a lap of the Glenmaggie track to realise his boat had turned
into a speeding fireball, and despite spectators trying to gain his
attention it was a cockpit dial that brought the problem to his attention.
"The oil pressure gauge was blinking red and I knew straight away there
was something wrong. "I stopped the boat and started fighting the fire,
the little fire extinguisher took some time to start working and I ended
up burning my hands," Darren said. "But just like all sports, the good
times come with the bad, luckily there wasn't too much damage sustained."
Long nights spent working in the garage, tirelessly fine tuning his
boat is an aspect of the sport Darren loves.
He said that the dynamics of the boat and the course he is racing on
greatly influence the weekly setup of his craft. "You need to take into
account the dynamics of a course, and change the size and dimensions
of the boat's propeller accordingly. "There are a lot of things that
need fine tuning, propeller sizes are very important, they balance speed
and turning ability," Darren explained. Darren said that while the sport
of boat racing has the 'hobby' tag in Australia, boat-racing careers
in the United States are common amongst top drivers. "The sport is very
big in the United States, and money is up for grabs, I hope to one day
break into the sport in the USA," Darren said. Darren's racing team,
Twin Cam, is made up of a dedicated support group, eager to see Darren
reach his racing potential. Mum, Maxine and dad Tony headline the team,
with sister Kim and mates Paul Ellis and Sean McCormack all pitching
in to ensure Darren's boat stays afloat. His girlfriend Kristy said
watching Darren race does make her nervous, but not quite as nervous
as it makes his mother. "Darren will be on the water in the middle of
a race, and his mum will be screaming out 'slow down Darren' from the
spectator area," she laughed. Quickly approaching the World Championships
next year, Darren is desperately seeking a sponsor, or two, so he can
continue on his winning ways. "At the moment, Repco Warragul are helping
me out with discounted parts, but I'm looking to get another sponsor
on board," Darren said. Just like other elite sports-people on the verge
of international success, Darren is self-funding his racing adventures
and it is clear that his passion for the sport will see him do so for
a long as required. "I'm going to New Zealand, whether it means taking
a loan, I don't care, I wouldn't miss the opportunity," he said. It
is clear Darren is a boat racer on his way to the top.
Need for speed! Darren Penington races across the water in his boat
'twin-cam', which has taken him to three consecutive national titles
and will land him in New Zealand early next year. Darren is looking
for sponsorship, but said whatever happens he will be racing at the
World Championships in New Zealand in February.
