The year 2005 will mark the first time in 15 years that a Canadian driver will pilot a hull on the Unlimited hydroplane racing circuit. In 1989, Canadian driver Pierre Lavigne drove only one heat of racing in Detroit. Theoret will be the first full-time foreign driver since the late Bob Hayward raced the Miss Supertest III in 1961. Bill Wurster, owner of the LLumar Window Film Hydroplane, said he selected Jean Theoret to drive the 2005 season because of his outstanding record for being the winningest Grand Prix Class Hydroplane driver in the history of the sport. Theoret has 43 victories, 6 National Championships and won the Grand Prix World Championship in New Zealand in 2000. "I believe we will have one of the most competitive boats on the ABRA circuit this year," Wurster said. "I want to put the most talented driver I can find in the cockpit to win the 2005 National Highpoint Championship and of course the coveted Chrysler-Jeep Superstores Gold Cup in Detroit for LLumar Window Film". Theoret was born into a family with a long history of hydroplane racing. He was Grand Prix "Rookie Driver of the Year" in 1983 at only 22 years of age. LLumar Window Film of Martinsville, Virginia has been the title sponsor for the U-8 Racing Team for nine consecutive years. 4th June 2005 - Manawatu Power Boat Club AGM ![]() 25th May 2005 - Eaton Calendar All pictured Motorsports on the Calendar that Eaton participate in. The Campaign to win the EC Griffiths Cup for New Zealand in 2005 must surely rank as an outstanding achievement by Team Annihilator Having been around the sport in the 60's through until 1980, I have seen a lot of changes. There can be no doubt that Hydroplane Racing in NZ owes a lot to Warwick Lupton and his Crew. At the Yarrawonga the Team firstly took out much acclaim in the Street Procession, and then on the Racetrack on Lake Mulwala they all performed brilliantly. Sure they didn't win the EC Griffiths Cup thru a simple belt failure on the blower but they did get second and third. It was moving to hear Warwick so gracious in defeat, acknowledging the large crowd and there was no doubt that here was a sportsman that the sport can be really proud of. Well done Team Annihilator. Around the Pits was a team of supporters that really encompassed what boat racing is all about. It was a great pleasure for me to be in the company of two of the sports well known Champions, Keith Driver of "Casper" fame from Southland, and Doug Cameron who campaigned "Miss Print" from Rotoiti Club in Nelson. All of us are now resident in Australia. Keith in Bermagui, Doug in Melbourne, and myself in Brisbane. We three Concur that the NZ Team was a credit to the Sport. All three boats qualified for the EC Griffiths Cup Final which was amazing considering they all drew Heat Three, and despite that they still Qualified. It was nearly Forty Years on the Detroit River in 1967 that I had witnessed such a sight as we saw when these magnificent Hydros with Rooster Tails flying high came around for the start of the Final. I understand that there is now a ground swell of new Hydros in NZ and this can only help in the promotion of the "Sport of Kings". It was great to talk to Dennis Dustin the President of the NZPBA, and all the many other boaties who were at Lake Mulwala in May 2005. Best wishes for the future to You All. Karaoke was supplied and well supported with most of the crowd having a bit of a Sing along Shirley and Malcolm who were on the Dance Floor 20th May 2005 - Annihilator Team News ![]() Thanks on behalf of the Annihilator Race Team for all the best wishes for their recent attempt to win the Griffith Cup. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be this time but we will be back. An excellent venue and great weather for the event, we started off the weekend by having the boats on display in Yarrawonga on the Friday. Saturday morning was a street parade this was really great and for a small town they had a big turn out. The three teams all dress in their uniforms stood on their trailers. Each boat had their New Zealand flag flying it was a neat spectacle and a good way to start the weekend off. Saturday was practice only which was delayed for various reasons, but all were able to test and Grant Rivers had time to change engines to make sure they were all ready to go. The draws for the heats was done on the Saturday night, we couldn't believe it when our three boats were drawn in the same heat. This actually worked to our advantage in the end because they were the last of three heats, so we had a pretty good idea who would be in the final and what our team had to do to make the final. Awesome effort to get all three in the final (out of 17 entries). Warwick and Ken ran most of the heat side by side which looked really good. David got a hole in his belly pan so he was a little off the pace just trying to finish the heat. His team was able to fix this in no time. Warwick also received some hull damage; the aluminum plate inside his left sponson came loose. Bit of glue and some more screws it was fixed. The final was so exciting the starter dropped the flag half way down the straight the Aussie logs and the KT Tunnel were off, Warwick was at the first corner with them, he shot to the lead on the next lap, Rival withdrew with a broken prop and then Warwick stopped with a broken blower belt, quiet devastating for all the kiwis who where on their feet in support. Ken battled on and tried to catch Tattoo he was about 1 and ½ boat lengths behind him when they crossed the finish line. I think Ken was more upset than Warwick because he had no more power and could not pass Tattoo. I believe Ken might be given a little more power for the World's. He certainly is earning this every time he goes out he is doing a great job. David was also unlucky, water had done some damage to his engine when he had the hole in the belly pan David finished the final in 3rd place only on 7 cylinders, it was great he was able to finish. Our hopes of bringing home the Griffith were over, all three teams did a great job and they should be proud of their efforts. The teams spent Monday checking the boats over before they flew home. Dick Corbett stayed with the boats and fixed the hull damage to David and Warwick's boat. Grant Rivers bought home some of David's engine to repair a piston and valves. The truth was the game plan was to go out and take it easy and just qualify for the final, then run strong in the final, but on the first turn I copped a lot of water which nearly stopped the engine. By the time the engine cleared itself and started to respond again, all of the boats had gone past and I had to try to run in rough water with poor visibility behind the other boats and try to avoid their roostertails and just finish the race so we didn't get to run to our real potential. At Dargle earlier this year we beat Rival in every race and won the Marg Watson Unlimited Displacement race. We were a serious contender for the Griffith cup but as fate and racing goes things don't always turn out as you like but I was still happy to finish the race with fourth place. I'd like to congratulate you on your obvious dedication to our chosen sport, we need more of it. I went over to the GP pits to wish all of the other drivers a good safe race and to meet the New Zealand drivers. Warwick, Ken and David all took time out for a talk, they were all very friendly and great representatives for New Zealand Powerboat racing. We'll be at Taree as part of the support program with the B.A.D. boats on the final weekend of the World GP Titles, maybe we'll see you there. Barry Chesser Its always good to hear from A driver and to get there thoughts on the race all feedback is most welcome and appreciated Cheers Phillip 13th May 2005 - A few More Pictures from Lake Mulwala ![]() Just a few of photos from the EC Griffith Cup Meeting. I will post more over the next couple of days. 10th May 2005 - EC Griffiths Cup Boats Finish List ![]() Listed by Heats then the Finals Photos are on the way shortly Times and Positions are not 100% correct as I have not seen any Official Results sheets yet. Heat One 1st - "Rival" John Cross, Time: 2.56 2nd - "GP55" Paul Cunningham, Time: 2.57 3rd - "Tattoo" Matt Ferris, Time: 2.58 4th - "Fury" Barry Chesser, Time: 3.25 5th - "Dragula" Tom Heffernan, Time: 3.45 All boats in this Heat went into the Finals. Rival proved to have exceptional Speed and really looks impressive and he only just held out a Hard charging GP55 for the Win. Tattoo was looking very good running in third just behind GP55 while Fury and Dragula lacked the Power to run with the top 3 there times turned out to be quick enough to get in the top 8 Final. Heat Two 1st - "Warlord" Paul Burton, Time: NA + One Minute Penalty 2nd - "Immortal" Mark Gauci, Time: NA 3rd - "Aussie Connection" Barry Taylor, Time: NA 4th - "KT 11" Darryl Hamilton, Time: NA 5th - "Kick Ass" Driver ?, Time: NA This Race turned out to have a huge impact on the Finals when Paul Burton was assessed a One Minute Penalty for racing on the course after he had crossed the Checkered Flag. Warlord did two complete laps after the flag and would have done a third if he hadn't run out of Fuel just as he approached the line. According to the Rules you cant continue to run the racing line at race sped or too pass boats after receiving the flag. Warlord broke both these rules and was assessed the penalty the Warlord team Appealed that they didn't see the Flag but there appeal was lost when they admitted they had seen the yellow(one lap to go) Flag. As I have seen in New Zealand this year Barry Taylor in Aussie Connection was very slow out on to the course and when the race started he was a full Half a lap behind this effectively meant he had no chance to make the final. Immortal was running in Second to Warlord for most of the race but lacked the pace to get a time quick enough for the final. KT 11 & Kick Ass were cross entered by Darryl Hamilton sadly in the draw he ended up with both his boats in the same Heat. I believe he raced in KT 11 and possibly Brett Sheppard? drove Kick Ass. Kick Ass expired early after the first turn with a Breakdown and KT 11 was going very well until the boat stopped the driver stood up had a fiddle with the engine and restarted to finish 4th? Heat Three 1st - "Annihilator" Warwick Lupton, Time: 3.01 2nd - "Annihilator 2" Ken Lupton, Time: 3.03 3rd - "Annihilator 3" David Alexander, Time: 3.14 4th - "Unleashed" Brett Sheppard, Time: NA 5th - "Image" Craig Lewis, Time: NA The Annihilator Team were amused to find that they were all drawn in the same Heat, Thankfully the rules stated that the Fastest 8 boats would all go in to the final so all that remained was for the team to have a safe clean fast run. Drama abounded with the Annihilator 3 boat getting slower through the run and starting to sit lower in the water this was due to the boat having a split hull in the engine bay. David knew what was happening but decided to continue the race as he didn't want to be left on the sidelines after coming all this way to race. Warwick and Ken Lupton had a good battle to see who would win this Heat with Warwick eventually getting the upper hand and taking the Win. Unleashed and Image were too far back to make the Finals EC Griffith Cup Final 1st - "Tattoo" Matt Ferris 2nd - "Annihilator 3" Ken Lupton 3rd - "Annihilator 2" David Alexander 4th - "Fury" Barry Chesser 5th - "Dragula" Tom Heffernan 6th - "GP55" Paul Cunningham 7th - "Annihilator" Warwick Lupton 8th - "Rival" John Cross This was an awesome race with all the boats almost in a line at the start John Cross got away to a good start with his boat Rival excelling at the start, as they came up to the first turn it was Warwick Lupton who arrived first but with Rival on the pole line it was John Cross who emerged from the turn first from Tattoo and Annihilator, Fury, GP55, Annihilator 3, Annihilator 2 & Dragula. Warwick was coming up to pass Rival when John Cross had a Breakdown and was out of the Race, The strong Kiwi Contingent were Cheering as Warwick went into the Turn in the lead but then the Blower Belt broke and Warwick was left dead in the water. Tattoo was being driven hard and assumed the lead with driver Matt Ferris taking the 25 year old Boat by the horns and charging hard. going into the next turn it was GP55 who fell by the wayside with mechanical issues stopping him on the racing line. Ken Lupton was charging hard in Annihilator 3 to try to catch Tattoo but was ruing the fact that he had the Teams smaller Horsepower motor in the Boat and came up short at the Finish line. Davis Alexander and Annihilator 3 were so busy repairing the hull after the Heat 3 damage that they didn't have time to change the Motor so it wasn't a surprise to find the engine that was stressed out carrying the water heavy boat in Heat 3 was going off song and eventually was left running on just 7 cylinders. He came home in 3rd place though and was happy to finish on the podium. Barry Chesser and Tom Heffernan didn't have the Horsepower to compete with the bigger boats but raced hard all weekend and deserved there spots in the Final Pictures are coming shortly 8th May 2005, 8pm(NZ Time) - Race Day for the EC Griffith Cup ![]() Congratulations Go to Matt Ferris and Tattoo for their Victory in the 2005 EC Griffiths Cup. And Heartache for the Three Boat Annihilator Team who finished Second and Third. Warwick Lupton in Annihilator stormed to the lead after the second turn passing John Cross driving the Blown Alcohol Displacement Boat Rival. Shortly after Warwick's Engine broke a blower Belt putting him out of the Race. Tattoo then took over the lead and was being chased down by Ken Lupton in Annihilator 3. Unfortunately Ken ran out of laps and Tattoo was a deserving winner. In Third place was a disappointed David Alexander who was only running on 7 cylinders. Hot Aussie favorite Warlord driven by Paul Burton was Penalized one Minute for doing extra Laps after the Checkered Flag had been waved. GP55 driven by Paul Cunningham Broke down on the second lap in the final he was well down on the rest of the field at this time though. The Annihilator Team will travel down to Melbourne and the Workshops of Boat Builder Tom Heffernan and look at making repairs to the Boats where needed and will regroup for the Challenge of the World Championships which are held at Taree in June 7th May 2005, 7pm(NZ Time) - Practice Day for the EC Griffith Cup ![]() Must apologize for not updating during the lunch break but things got away from me a bit. This morning the Teams participated in a few Team Photo shots before taking part in the Parade through the Township of Yarrawonga. The Parade was will supported with almost all the GP Hydros taking part only Aussie Connection was missing in action from the Big Boats in the Parade. Practice was to start early in the afternoon but due to organization Issues it was almost 2pm before the Practice got underway. The course was set out on the lake in such a way as you could not view both turns from the Pit area this did not go down to well with most of the teams hoping that the course would be shifted later in the day. Only the Boats in the EC Griffiths Cup elected to partake in practice, it may the fact that boats have to pay a rescue service? charge that keeps the other Boaties from making use of the practice day. The 3 Annihilator boats ran the day with out any major mishaps. All the engines were tested to make sure that there were no problems at all with the running of the boats, and all three drivers were confident with the way that the Boats ran. The Boats will compete in Heats tomorrow to determine which Boats will Race in the Final. Its still to be decided just how many boats will be in the final and the draw will be made tonight at the Mulwala Ski Club to determine which boats are in which Qualifying Heat. 7th May 2005, 7am(Nz time)(oops that was 11am Nz time) - Annihilator Team Prepare for the Cup ![]() Our first update for the Cup weekend this is only a brief test to check systems are all go. The three boats Grand Prix Hydroplane Team based in Waverley Wanganui are ready to take on the best of Australian Grand Prix Hydroplane Teams when they will compete in the 2005 Mulwala Ski Club E.C Griffith Cup to be held over the 7-8th May in Yarrawonga north of Melbourne. New Zealand last won the EC Griffith Cup in 2001 when Warwick Lupton won both the EC Griffith Cup and the AE Baker Australasian Hydroplane Championship over one weekend from the Aussie's. Lead by Warwick Lupton (Annihilator) who has had an outstanding season in New Zealand winning the 80th running of the Masport Cup, AE Baker Australasian Hydroplane Championship, North Island and South Island Grand Prix Hydroplane titles. “ We have had a few minor problems with the boats this season, tested new rudders after two of our boats had crashes last season, we will have to dial in some more horsepower to beat the Aussie's , Grant Rivers our engine man has got the engines ready to go.” David Alexander driver of (Annihilator 2) cousin to Warwick had a high speed crash in February while competing in the second heat of the Masport Cup. David won the first heat from Warwick , at the drop of the flag the turn fin ripped of Annihilator 2 causing the Hydroplane to do two 360 flat spins. The left sponson, wing and bottom of the boat were badly damaged. Three weeks later after many hard hours work the boat was repaired and back on the water for testing. Fitted with new fin and rudder the boat is now back up to speeds of 160-170 mph. “ I feel confident the boat is handling good , I haven’t got up to maximum speed but I am ready I want to win the Griffith Cup” Despite David’s accident at Lake Karapiro he had had a pretty good season winning both the North and South Island Unlimited Unrestricted titles, and the Master of Mangakino in January. Young rookie Ken Lupton driving (Annihilator 3) son of Warwick, at 18 years Ken is the youngest Grand Prix Hydroplane Driver in the World. Ken’s first full season driving the 510 cui supercharged ex Graham Weller’s ‘Rat Attack’ Grand Prix Hydroplane has proved he has what it takes to line up with his team mates. At the New Zealand Powerboat National Championships held Easter on the Porirua harbor Ken won the New Zealand Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship, his father finishing third. Ken will make his international debut at Yarrawonga. The three Hydroplanes will remain in Australia when they will also compete in the 2005 Union International Montonutique World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship at Taree north of Sydney June 18-19th and 25-26th. Warwick and David finished second and third in the 2004 World title to Australian Grant Harrison driving ‘GP101’.
