Wanganui's Richard Murray on the way to 5th place overall they did finish this run much to the delight of the crowd, might need to paint the boat orange with an 01 if he keeps doing tricks like this.

Hot day with Two Boats badly Bent in big incidents and some very close racing, Duncan Wilson was running very smooth and taking the fight to Richard Burt in super Boat class but in the top 4 runoff some one nudged the fuel switch to almost Off position and when they took off from the start the boat ground to a halt around the first Turn.

The Gulf Harbour round of Offshore racing was cancelled today due to safety concerns. The Weather was very wet and windy with low cloud. The low cloud meant the Helicopter with rescue divers could not fly. Also a number of the Volunteer Patrol Boats rang to say they would not be coming so the decision was made to cancel. The Harbormaster would not commit to the event possibly being run on Sunday.

A large Crowd on both days and they were all desperate to be under an umbrella or Gazebo due to the burning hot Sun.

I have to start doing pictures for the gallery from my images and a Gallery of Brett's Images from Sunday.and make disc's for some people email images to others, do a story and pics for someone else, There's a slim chance of sleep on the horizon apparently too. Oh have to do the Driver of the Month as well, this particular driver/team may be interested in a small Trophy Cabinet I think the one on the classifieds page is way too big.

One Of Brett's images as Warlord had a moment with G-Force.

9th February 2009 - Appeal on Behalf of Ned Dawson
As some of you will know I am also very much involved with Jetsprinting here downunder. Well yesterday we lost one of our jetsprint fraternity in the Australian bushfires, killed when he was trying to escape from the fires, leaving behind a wife and family. Steve is just one of over 100 people killed so far in the fires and they are not finished yet, not by a long shot. Phil Dixon, my partner in the True Blue jetsprint team lost all his property but his house and family were spared, which we are thankful for.

We are starting a fund raising venture to help all those who weren't so lucky. Every subscription that comes in for any of my magazines including H2O Full Throttle is going to the bush fire appeal so I would like to ask you all to consider subscribing to the magazine, either for yourself or your friends, or both. Our goal is to raise $100,000 so anything you can do is appreciated. Please also pass this around to everyone else you know and I thank you for your help. Here are the links to the three mags.

H2O Full Throttle - http://www.h2ofullthrottle.com/subscribe.php

HeliOps - http://www.heliopsmag.com/subscribe.html

HeliTac - http://www.helitacmag.com/subscribe.html

Thanks again everyone and here is the news item about Steve. His boat was called Scream and was a work of art.

Article from: Herald Sun
February 08, 2009 12:00am
A SPEEDBOAT champion who died trying to save his boat is among at least five killed in fires that raged through Wandong and Clombinane.
Steve Lackas, a veteran of the V8 Superboat Championships, was attempting to tow his boat to safety when his property became engulfed in flames on Saturday afternoon.
His home was one of scores of properties destroyed around Kilmore, 60km north of Melbourne.
Michael Hendy had the heart-wrenching task of retrieving Mr Lackas' body with other local residents after the fire passed through. "It was terrible," he said.
"He had made a phone call to a friend of mine to say that he needed help, and by the time he got there, the house was engulfed in flames. We arrived after that."
It is believed Mr Lackas was married with one child.
Mr Hendy said Mr Lackas had been preparing to leave in a bus, towing his boat, before running back into his house at the last minute to get another belonging.
"The bus was still running (when Mr Lackas was found) but he hasn't managed to get outside again," he said.
"The tragedy is that the bus and the shed were untouched, but the house that he ran into was burnt out."

The New Zealand Grand Prix Hydroplane Drivers Club would like to offer there Condolences to the Lackas Family. We also hope that the Members of the Warlord Team and all the Australians who traveled here for the World Championships are able to be in touch with there Family's back home and that all will be safe and well.

8th February 2009 - News 5.00pm
AE Baker Race 2 was won by Graeme Weller from J. Michael Kelly and Warwick Lupton. Brett Niddrie in Warlord failed to Finish the Race so it just depends what the result of the protest is going to be will the 1st race be rerun?? great dramas provisionally Graeme Weller is the winner of AE Baker from Warwick Lupton and possibly Brett Niddrie or J. Michael Kelly in 3rd?

Crikey what a great AE Baker Race David Alexander looked like he got the door closed on him by Warlord with David being launched high into the Air and coming down hard splitting the Left Sponson and Race control DQ Warlord but Warlord will be defending the Incident as they are confident they were not in violation of the holding your line ruling in the first turn should be another long delay before the last heat is run.

David continued for a couple of Races but pulled out with a lap to go. Unofficially

Final Official Results sheet from the World Championship

All Boats have been weighed and the Boats are all over the Minimum Weight limit. Heaviest GP Boat was the Annihilator 2 Boat. And the Lightest Boat is The Boss.

The Third Heat of the WC was a very close Race with Warlord winning by just a few Boat lengths. The Boss was just a 100 meters further back in the Race and Scott Coker finished nearly a lap back after again missing the start.

David Alexander and Scott Coker were the only Boats to finish every lap of all the WC Heats.

8th February 2009 - News 12.10pm

First Turn Action bit of drama during the race and there are hints of a protest but I will clear that up when some one lets me in on the Secret.

The Race was excellent from my perspective Ken Lupton was running hard with Brett Niddrie and Graeme Weller. J. Michael Kelly and David Alexander were the next partnership fighting. Warwick Lupton and Scott Coker missed the start and were well back in the Pack. On Lap 1 at the turn Warlord seemed to ride over the wake of G-Force and this may lie at the center of the ongoing Drama. Warwick Lupton's Boat was off song and he was riding very wide to give everyone a clear run as they lapped him. Scott Coker was too far back from the start to make an impression. J. Michael Kelly drove very well passing David Alexander up the inside to finish Second just 200 metres behind Warlord.

There are two Protests currently in the Heat Result.

Very Quick result more to follow all unofficial at the moment:
Heat 1 of The World GP Championships
1st Brett Niddrie Warlord
2nd J. Michael Kelly The Boss
3rd David Alexander Annihilator 2
4th Scott Coker Fair Warning
5th Warwick Lupton Annihilator
DNF Ken Lupton Annihilator 3
DNF Graeme Weller G-Force.

A reminder of the current points standings in the World Championship. The First race will be around about 11am - 11.30am everyone is keen to go the Annihilators lost two engines yesterday in Ken's and Warwick's Boats Warwick has borrowed the Bottom end of David's 3rd engine to use as a spare if needed and Ken has gone back to his old Motor that he used with success at Tauranga and EC Griffith Cup. The Boss has only the one engine for today but the boat is going good. G-Force and Fair Warning have no major issues at all.

8th February 2009 - News 8.30am

Well its just gone 8.30am and a mist has rolled in but it promises to be a cracker of a day once again with temperatures in the mid 30's expected

7th February 2009 - News 9.45pm

J. Michael Kelly had the boss humming in his last test run with the boat dancing down the back straight on the sponson's just like a GP should be driven.

Warwick Lupton on the other hand was forced to borrow David Alexander's 3rd Engine "Old Faithful" and set his Team to striping all Blower Electrics and externals from his damaged engine and replacing the ones ones on "Old Faithful" should make the old engine hum along. Warwick will have the boys swap the engine first thing in the morning so he can test it before the first Heat of the World Championships. Warwick was even kind enough to dust the cobwebs off his wallet and shout the boys some Steak Sandwich's for Tea.

Terry Mckinstry in First Offence up to his old Tricks again eh.

There have been a few near misses in the F1 Race with Tony Latimer and Anthony Robinson coming together in Heat 3 of the F1 Race. Only Minor damage and both drivers still on speaking terms to boot.

They just had the first heat of The NZPBA Nationals for the GP class and only 4 Boats fronted up to start with David Alexander taking an early lead from Scott Coker Until the end of the second Lap when David Stopped. Luke Sharp in Prompt Parts tried to keep Scott Coker honest and in third place was Jeff Price in Thirsty.
All the other GP boats in the race were changing Engines but I wouldn't expect them to be in the Final Heat of the GP either.

Just arrived at Lake Karapiro it looks like it will be a very hot day absolutely no breeze to speak of the lakes flat as a pancake and only blue skies to be seen.

4th February 2009 - Young Lupton’s 1800 hp Hydroplane repaired and ready to go!

Leading Grand Prix Hydroplane Driver Ken Lupton Annihilator 3 (625 points) in the 2009 Union International Montoniquie World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship has worked round the clock over the last two weeks making repairs to his Jamie Auld 8 meter design Hydroplane after he road up the rooster tail of Australian entry Brett Niddrie driving Warlord in the first round of the two round World Championship in Tauranga. The boat suffered a two meter hole in the right side rear of the boat but Ken went on to finish the race and win it with the side of his boat missing, the 510 cu supercharge engines have been refreshed and one is now been fitted into the boat before they head to Lake Karapiro, Cambridge for the final round this weekend.

Waverley rival David Alexander Annihilator 2 (469 points) had an outstanding run at Tauranga taking out the 84th Masport Cup and currently is in second place in the World Championship only had to refresh his 2500 hp engine for this weekend final.

Australian entry Brett Niddrie Warlord (400 points) flew back into New Zealand last Sunday and has been rebuilding an engine and repairing a gear box but is confident he will be ready and is keen to gain maximum points to take the lead from the Kiwi’s.

Auckland’s Graeme Weller G-Force ( 395 points) with the ex Casino De Montreal Hydroplane which Graeme bought from three times world champion Jean Theoret Canada suffered some minor engine problems at Tauranga , hold ups with getting parts from out of the country has had the G-Force team working late hours this week putting the boat back together.

Current World Champion Warwick Lupton Annihilator (352 points) didn’t travel to well at Tauranga spending more time trying to keep his 1800 hp 180 mph beast on the water. Lupton said the boat had so much horse power it literally wanted to fly like a plane we have made some changes to the rudder and shaft angles this should make the handling of the boat much better otherwise we could be swimming Lupton said.

Otorohanga driver Scott Coker Fair Warning (264 points ) also had handling problems at Tauranga they have put more horse power in the boat this season they have made changes to the set up and balance of the boat and tested several different propellers they are confident they will be gaining points in the final three races.

American Unlimited Hydroplane driver J. Michael Kelly came out to the first round in Tauranga to drive Peter Knights Snrs the Boss. The boat hasn't been on the Grand Prix racing scene for three years and Peter decided to bring the boat back out for the World Championship and offered it to the young American driver. J. Michael Kelly driver of Unlimited Hydroplane U13 Spirit of Detroit he has been driving Unlimited Hydroplanes for the past four years. He has won 19 world records and currently still holds six of them. J. Michael is new to grand Prix Hydroplanes but had no trouble adapting to the smaller hydroplane and showed that he can foot it with the Aussie and Kiwi drivers. Kelly currently on (127 points) fly’s back into New Zealand Thursday and will make some changes to the boat and test on Saturday setting the boat up ready to line up for the finals on Sunday.

There are three heats of the championship to run, points over the two heats from Tauranga are carried forward to the final three races on Sunday at Lake Karapiro, and this will determine who will be the 2009 U.I.M World Grand Prix Hydroplane Champion. The Grand Prix Hydroplanes will race five times on Sunday as the Kiwis will defend the AE Baker an Australasian Hydroplane Championship.

Approximately 60 competitors will compete over the two days with Saturday being round two of the New Zealand Powerboat Nationals featuring Formula One Tunnels, 3 and 6 litre hydroplanes and V8 flat bottoms. Racing starts 10am both days $10 per adult children 12yrs and under are free. For further information check out www.hydroplane.co.nz

3rd February 2009 - Bob Wartinger Seminars
Last evening was the first of our Medical and Safety seminars presented by Bob Wartinger. Although the number of attendees was disappointing the content was excellent with many of those that attended making comments such as "mind blowing" and "unbelievable".
Bob's presentation is aimed at all formats of our sport and therefore there is content that directly relates to Thundercat racing and Jet Boat racing as well as circuit and offshore. Those that attended last night will be far better competitors from the experience and will have a far better chance of winning whilst avoiding damage to themselves and to others.
Also there is content that relates to officials and administrators. Again, an opportunity to raise the performance of people that contribute to the sport in this way whilst ensuring that they enjoy the experience also. Happy competitors and happy officials make great racing.
We are most fortunate to have someone of Bob's calibre travel from the United States to New Zealand to present these seminars. Bob is arguably the most qualified person in the World on medical and safety matters relating to power boat racing. Don't let yourself and/or your members miss this once only opportunity.
Please ensure that all codes of our sport at least have some representation present at Friday's seminar; 9.30am at the Riverside of Cambridge Motor Lodge and Conference Centre, 7 Williamson St., Cambridge. Tickets are available at the door. Light refreshments included.

President, NZPBF

It is unfortunately too rough to race at the moment the wind coming in to shore is creating some big rollers side on to the Boats. There is also difficulty launching the boats from the beach with the wave action moving the sand and digging holes around the trailer wheels.
Just 5 minutes of practice was done before the racing was called off, and it may be a few hours yet before we see any action at all today. Racing in the nationals will be carried over to tomorrow if all the races are not run today.
Internet is a bit funny here I can upload information ok it seems but cant actually view the Web pages?

John Ryan is here in Dancing Bear Too running injectors instead of a blower.

Ben Ryan had Mainland Miss out as you can see he has lost the water hose at the rear and the engine was not getting water but should not have suffered after only two gentle laps.

A good line up of boats with the testing due to start shortly and then into the race programme.
the wind may be an issue blowing into shore across the course it is expected to drop and the temperature is going to get pretty high.
I will be out on a boat taking some shots most of the day will post an update in lunch break.

31st January 2009 - News 6.45am

Lake Rotoiti is looking a little rough at 6.35am, but its going to be a scorching day. The finish line is just to the left of shot and the outside turn buoy can be seen on the right.

31st January 2009 - News 1.15am
Lake Rotoiti is looking good weather wise just a tad dark at the moment although there was talk recently from a likely bunch of lads of putting some glow sticks on the buoys and going for a spin.

Sad News is only 3 of the 5 GP Boats entered are here to race with the Weller's boat G-Force unable to compete due to engine parts not arriving in time and Ken Lupton Annihilator GP009 didn't have enough time to complete the repairs to his damaged Boat.

I will Do some updates throughout the day although I hope to get out on the water for Photos at some point. The connection isn't to bad, mind you don't think there are any other idiots up at this time of the morning hogging all the vodafone lines.

30th January 2009 - News

Lake Rotoiti I believe racing is on the right hand end of the Lake. Racing in the National Championships is on Saturday and the Lakeland Regatta is on Sunday.

Not sure what the internet reception will be like out there. If There's no update on Saturday Morning then its because there's no reception and I will pop into Rotorua on Saturday Night and post an update from there.
