26th January 2005 - MEDIA RELEASE

SPEEDBOATS CELEBRATE 80 YEARS OF MASPORT CUP THIS WEEKEND

One of New Zealand's longest running powerboat races will mark its 80th year this Saturday (January 29) when 14 of Australasia's fastest boats compete for the Masport Cup on Manukau Harbour.

Auckland Anniversary is a fitting occasion for what has been the main feature of the New Zealand powerboat racing calendar since it began in 1925 with the inaugural Masport Cup on Auckland Harbour.

The Manukau Auckland Speed Boat Club will host this year's competition after member Graeme Weller won the 2004 title. But with Weller's boat 'Warlord' back in Australia this year, locals' hopes are instead carried by Alan Lewis in 'Little Cracker', Peter Thomas in 'Twister' and Luke Sharp in 'Humminbird'.

Other major contenders for this year's honors are Victorian unlimited hydro boat 'Aussie Connection', driven by Peter Taylor, Steve Hughes in 'Total Lubricants' from Wellington, and previous Masport Cup holder Warwick Lupton in 'Annihilator', from Wanganui.

With a larger than normal number of challengers this year, there will be an elimination race starting from 11am on Saturday to determine the 10 fastest boats to race for the Masport Cup. After a brief refueling stop, these will go on to compete in two points races - comprising 4 laps of a 2 km circuit - with the highest cumulative total winning the title.

Manukau Auckland Speed Boat Club Treasurer John Weller says he expects up to 6,000 spectators to attend the event. "It's always a great day out," says Mr Weller. "There will be a wide range of boats out on the water in fast and furious competition, as well as on shore entertainment for boating enthusiasts and families to enjoy free of charge."

The crowd will be treated to world-class racing amongst an international field confirmed for the weekend; and with such a high calibre of entries Mr Weller expects the craft to be pushed to their limits. "These boats are capable of speeds of 180-190 mph, so there will certainly be some high speed, high risk racing."

The Masport Cup started out as a testing ground for New Zealand's fledgling engineering companies, and in the early 1920's, Masport - then Mason and Porter Ltd - was better known for its automotive engines than its mowers and barbecues. For them and other boating enthusiasts, powerboat racing was a way to match revolutionary engine designs against rivals' from across the country.

'Miss Masport' was the first New Zealand boat to be specially designed and equipped for speed racing, and reaching a speed of 31 mph, may have even been the fastest boat in the world at the time.

The first Masport Cup was held on Auckland Harbour and won by local speedboat, Fleetwing Junior, which achieved a top speed of 35 mph. Since then, the race has attracted a strong rivalry between clubs nationwide and produced a string of legends, such as the long-dominant Knight family from Christchurch, Wellington's Sir Len Southward, and the celebrated boats 'Pelorus Jack Senior' from Picton and 'Miss Wanganui'.

The 2005 Masport Cup will be held at Manukau Auckland Speed Boat Club, located under Mangere Bridge on Waterfront Reserve, Waterfront Road.

CAPTION: Running in the Masport Cup this Saturday - 'Little Cracker', driven by Alan Lewis from Auckland.

23rd January 2005 - Manawatu Gold Cup Meeting

I Had a good day at the races which kicked off just after 11am. There will be a full list of results posted at the NZPBA Site in there News section as I had to leave early at 3.10pm (the tide was starting to turn at this point anyway) to catch a Speedway Meeting so I will only post some views and pictures.
There will be More Pictures in the Gallery section later on Monday.

Arrived Early as they said racing would get under way pretty quickly. I learnt that Tony Latimer had Got Air under his brand new F1 Tunnel during testing on Saturday and did a 360. The boat was Damaged as you would expect so he returned to race on Sunday in the old Patriot. Gusty stuff and a good dedication to the Sport.

There was A big Incident in the first F1 Race on Sunday when by all accounts Kent Dunlop Barrell rolled the VDO Boat going into the first Turn sadly I had chosen that race to switch to the top turn for Photo sand was unable to view the incident. Kent was shaken but otherwise unhurt and the boat had some minor damage but should be right for next weekends racing.

There were certainly plenty of Photographers at the days meeting two of whom were new to boat racing and thought it would be neat to be standing at the waters edge when Ian Easton did a demo run in his Jet Sprint Boat, needless to say towels were offered to dry the cameras pretty quickly.

There was some very good racing and on such a narrow river the racing was rather clean.
Standout Boats of the day was "Midnight" Steve Mathieson which won all its races with ease(at least the ones I was there for)
There was good race between F3 Boat "Instigator" and ModVP Boat "Shogun" that went right down to the wire and showed how a river course can produce a good race between different classed Boats. "Instigator" just held off "Shogun" at the line.

There was a GP Boat at the meeting alas it was only a Radio Control Version and the river was too rough to drive it

Not sure what Class this guy wanted to run in?

"Advance Electrical" had a tough time trying to hold off "Cobra"

"Southern Lights" was pushing hard in the first Race to win

"VDO" and Kent Dunlop would later have a Big Incident

"Midnight" and Steve Mathieson was unbeatable during the races I saw

"Bout Time" a Wanganui Rotary Powered Boat

"Xcellence" Ian Easton's Jet Sprint Boat kept a few Photographers hosed down during a Demo run

22nd January 2005 - Manawatu Gold Cup Meeting
This Race meeting was turned into a One Day Meeting to be held on Sunday 23rd January due to a smaller than expected entry. The wind was a little breezy and the tide was turning when I showed up so the Boats that were there were not on the water for testing. I will travel back there tomorrow for a few Pictures and some news on the early races

15th January 2005 - Harold Mills Feature

UL-40 Red Dot Corp. hydroplane driver Harold Mills the 50-year-old driver from Lakeridge honored by Greensboro NC based organization that's working toward greater diversity and minority opportunity in motorsports.

"Congratulations to Harold Mills and to the team for your great accomplishments in being the First African American driver to ever compete at Seafair. As the Spirit of Wendell Scott and the Spirit of the late Kennedy Team, Formula 1 Racing continues to permeate the lives of minorities in the motorsports industry. Harold Mills continues to be that Spirit of light for many other minority youth who rise up every morning not thinking of having a career in the Outboard Motorsports industry.
God bless you, the family, and the team for having the guts to continue to do the right thing. Keep doing what you have been doing because it's working for you."
Wayne Clapp
Executive Director
The Association For Diversity In Motorsports Inc.

Harold Mills understands his place in time and history.
He's well aware of what he means to his sport, his boat team, his Renton-area community and his race.
A national powerboat champion with nearly 30 years of experience, Mills is beginning to emerge as a heavyweight in the unlimited lights for the Issaquah-based UL-40 Thunder Valley Racing TeamMills became the first African-American to compete in the Columbia Cup at Tri-Cities two weeks ago. He finished fifth after receiving a one-lap penalty for bumping.
``I did not run into him,'' Mills still contends. ``But you still take the penalty and you go on. We still made the final, and that was the goal.''
``I have a lot of people pulling for me,'' Mills said of racing in front of family and friends. ``The African-American community is pulling for me, and it's for their sake.

UL-40 Red Dot Corp is a 3,000-pound boat, including a new 468 cubic-inch blown-methanol Chevrolet engine, supercharger, prop and prop shaft, and electronics. It Competes against the Turbine Engines of the other boats which while costing $65,000us can last for up to 5 years(but don't sound half as good as a V8)

Hydroplane driver Harold Mills is uninjured after a spectacular blow over accident Sunday, July 11 that destroyed the former national champion "Fast Freddy" 2.5 liter modified boat. While racing Sunday, Harold was leading and pulling away when he caught a gust of wind. The "Fast Freddy" did 2 - 1/2 somersaults, hit the water, did 3 to 4 snap rolls, ripping off the right sponson. The remaining pieces of the boat were autographed and given to fans. All that is left of the boat is the left sponson, cockpit and the motor. Harold will return to racing July 23-25 at Tri-Cities, WA with the UL-40 Thunder Valley Racing of the Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing Association.

11th January 2005 - Jason Moughan gets his First Drive of Little Cracker

Young Jason Moughan 14 years of age got his first drive in the "Little Cracker" boat at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino January 9th 2005. Jason was full of confidence having been coached well by Alan, who also had full confidence in Jason's ability to drive the boat capably. Jason's Mother Denise however was a bundle of nerves as she requested the safety Boats to remain on station for Jason's first Test.
Jason started out to the course easy and then put the boot in and ran some pretty tidy and fast laps in the boat. When it came time to stop it took the Red Lights on the Safety Boat to bring Jason to a stop. I imagine he thought the Crew on shore were waving him on in encouragement.

10th January 2005 - North Island Unlimited Unrestricted Championship

On the 9th January 2005 at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino. The New Zealand Hydroplane Drivers Club Members took to the water to Battle for two Titles of North Island Unlimited Unrestricted Championships and also the Master of Mangakino. This Event was hosted by the Geyserland Power Boat Racing Club Inc.
Unfortunately NZGP member Scott Coker was unable to make repairs to his engine in "Fair Warning" in time to compete but the club was well represented by Warwick Lupton in "Annihilator", David Alexander in "Annihilator II", Ken Lupton in "Annihilator III", Alan Dennis in "California Girls" and Malcolm Wotton in "Renegade". also joining in for the Title of North Island Unlimited Unrestricted was John Hitchcock in "Advance Electrical".

Saturday 8th January
Racing was to be over two days but on the Saturday the wind made the lake too rough to race on while conditions on the front straight were not too bad out on the back straight in the middle of the lake it was too choppy making conditions unsafe for racing. Saturday was therefore reduced to a few boats taking test runs only.

Sunday 9th January 2005
The day dawned very overcast with showers early on but the Lake was in good condition with a very calm surface. Racing got under way just after 10am. First race for the NZGP Crew was Heat 1 of the North Island UU Champs with all boats making the start line it was going to be a cracker of a race. and early on it was a great battle in to the second turn with David Alexander and Warwick Lupton side by side and very close together. Shortly after this Warwick had a Bad Vibration and had to shut the engine down and pull out of the race. Ken Lupton was flying on his outside Line and starting to threaten David when he lost drive coming out of the Top Turn to also not finish the race. at the end of the race the running order was "Annihilator II", "California Girls", "Advance Electrical" and "Renegade".
During the break between heats the GP crews were hard at work with an Engine Change to Warwick Luptons "Annihilator" and a Gearbox Change to Ken Luptons "Annihilator III".
Prior to Heat 2 Warwick took "Annihilator" for a Test drive only to discover that the Boat was not running right and it was decided to Trailer the boat for the rest of the meeting.
Heat 2 of the North Island UU Champs and Ken Luptons Crew were still hard at it repairing the Gearbox so it was only four starters for this race with Alan Dennis in "California Girls" on the inside he managed to stay with the more powerful GP boat of David Alexander for the early laps before "Annihilator II" pulled away to win from "California Girls", "Advance Electrical" and "Renegade".

North Island Unlimited Unrestricted Championship Final Results.
1st - David Alexander "Annihilator II"
2nd - Alan Dennis "California Girls"
3rd - John Hitchcock "Advance Electrical"

The Master of Mangakino is open to the fastest boats on the day and joining the 5 active runners from the UU Races was the ModVP boat "You Get That" Heat 1 and Ken Lupton was trying to take the battle to David Alexander but the outside line and David's good form proved to be too much for Ken and he settled for second ahead of "California Girls", "Advance Electrical", "Renegade" and "You Get That".

Heat 2 and Malcolm Wotton had withdrawn "Renegade", Once again the two GP boats were hard to beat although "California Girls" kept them honest for the first few laps the real drama came when Ken Lupton pulled out and then suffered a small fire which was quickly brought under control by Ken and the Safety Boat, the damage was only minor. Once more David Alexander in "Annihilator II" won from "California Girls", "Advance Electrical" and "You Get That"

Master of Mangakino Final Results

"Renegade"

Malcolm Wotton
A veteran of the racing scene Malcolm will have plenty of experience and will be hoping the bad luck of last weeks racing wont come back to haunt him .

5th January 2005 - Malcolm Wotton's "Renegade" Adventures

On January 2nd at Lake Karapiro Regatta hosted by the Cambridge Waikato Powerboat Club, Malcom Wotton was hoping to take his Grand National Hydroplane to 1st place in the North Island GNH Championship but alas his day was about to turn to disaster. In Race one Malcolm noticed a dropping Oil Pressure so eased it home to secure some points in the first race. Upon arriving back at shore he expressed concern that the Engine was gone for the day. As the crew brought the Boat back to the pit area it was pointed out that the entire Rear Propeller shaft Strut had broken all the bolts off and was simply hanging lose, Malcolm felt no Vibrations during his run so he was lucky more damage wasn't done. Its possible the lose drive shaft caused the broken Oil Line and the Engine may well be ok for next weeks Racing at Lake Maraetai, Mangakino but an inside inspection will confirm this. The Prop Support and the rear hull damage should be easily fixed in time.
We wish Malcolm the best of luck in his Repairs.

November 30th 2004 - Grand Prix Hydroplanes Shake the Banks of the Oreti River

The biggest crowd ever to be seen lined the banks of the Oreti River, Invercargill last weekend. Spectators were blown away as they watched the three boat Annihilator Hydroplane Race Team blast down the challenging river course. Not seen before in Invercargill the crowds were dumfounded by the spectacular display of these Hydroplanes. One spectator said "they are like an aero plane on water totally awesome"

Spectators were not disappointed as the Wanganui based Grand Prix Hydroplane Drivers, Warwick Lupton son Ken, and Cousin David Alexander tested their skills on the river which was no more than 75m wide. Competition over the weekend was timed flying laps.

Warwick Lupton driver of Annihilator said he could not get his foot full on the gas before he had to back off for the corner, but he was up for the challenge and took his 510 supercharged big block engine to speeds of 150mph down the straight a ways. "We are used to race speeds of 170mph plus this course certainly was a test of all the driver's skills."

Lupton not to be out done by his younger team mates took out the competition with the fastest lap time of 43.8sec.Annihilator 2 driven by David Alexander felt robbed of victory when he was forced to withdraw with a vibration after his first run of 44 sec. Alexander felt confident he could better Lupton's time.

New kid on the block and the youngest Grand Prix Hydroplane driver in the World Ken Lupton driving Annihilator 3 finished with a top lap speed of 47.2sec. A good time matching his father's first attempt at the flying lap competition.

November 28th 2004 -2005 "EC Griffith Cup" - Media Release

The Australian Power Boat Association is pleased to confirm the dates of the 92nd running of the prestigious E.C.Griffith Cup will be the Anzac weekend in April 2005.

The venue will be at Yarrawonga on the foreshore of beautiful Lake Mulwala on the mighty Murray River, Victoria.

The event will now be held on Sunday 24th April with the Anzac Day public holiday on Monday a back up day if required.

With final approvals in place event Organiser the Victorian Council of the A.P.B.A. will now be working feverishly to create one of the most anticipated EC Griffiths Cups in recent history.

This marks the return to big time boat racing for Yarrawonga and much planning has gone into the event to make it a bigger and more successful event than in years past and the first step into securing the venue as a permanent home for Australia's most prestigious powerboat race.

The event was previously held at Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River in NSW

The EC Griffith Cup was donated in 1912 by Mr. Ernest Griffith for competition between open hull class boats of unlimited engine capacity. Mr. EC Griffith was a founder of the A.P.B.A. was a jeweler by trade and hand made the pure silver trophy which is valued at $65,000 but is priceless in terms of heritage.

The EC Griffith Cup is Australasia's oldest motorsport trophy. 2005 marks its 92nd running.

The competition started in 1913 and had to cease for the duration of both wars. A New Zealand boat, Redhead owned and driven by Sir Len Southward, took the cup to New Zealand in 1949 and an Australian team didn't win it back until 1963.

The Cup has regularly traveled between the two countries since 1989 when Latimer Lodge a Grand Prix Hydroplane driven by P.G. Knight won it back for New Zealand. This boat also held the World Grand Prix Hydroplane water speed record at 179mph.

In 2002 the GP Hydroplane Big Chief, of Australian Paul Burton driven by Greg Holland won the Cup back for Australia from the Kiwis.

27th November 2004 - Flat out on Oreti in a big bang
They look like the sort of thing Batman and Robin would slip into – but even the crime-fighting comic heroes would struggle to keep these babies under control. They are the big bangers of speedboat racing, the motor-blowing, deafening, speed-shattering grand prix hydroplanes with their fighter plane cockpits. They reach speeds of more than 250kmh.

This weekend Southland fans will see some of the country's best in action on the Oreti River, near Sandy Point. Three grand prix hydroplanes will compete in the Southland Powerboat Club's annual two-day regatta, which caters for boats of all classes and speeds and which starts at 10am today. It is the hydroplanes, worth more than $150,000 each, and with their 2000-odd horsepower grunt, that will be the big attraction.

Former Southlander Allan Dennis, who now lives in Hamilton, will drive his just as impressive formula one tunnel boat and can't wait to tear around the normally peaceful Oreti River. "Southlanders would never have seen a GP hydroplane on the water down here for the past 20 years," Dennis said. Peter Knight senior (from Christchurch) would probably have been the last guy to run a GP hydroplane on the Oreti River. It will be something to see." And something to hear. "The noise of these things when they start up from the river bank is absolutely deafening," Dennis said. "The earth shakes – a bit like it did the other morning actually. "We didn't come to Southland to have an earthquake turned on but it was interesting."

The three-boat Annihilator hydroplanes team from Waverly, near Wanganui, will also be in action. Annihilator 1, driven by Warwick Lupton, will again be the combination to beat. Lupton won the South Island title on Lake Dunstan last weekend, ahead of team-mate David Alexander and Dennis. Lupton should know something about horsepower. His father, Snow, trained the 1983 Melbourne Cup winner, Kiwi. Dennis, who has been powerboat racing for 25 years, urges Southlanders to check out the action. "They have massive propellers," he said. "They're the sort of things that you'd probably put on the Picton ferry". "They blast water out the back like you would not believe."

was second and 'Annihilator 2 David Alexander

was third.

The Unlimited Unrestricted Championship sore the positions change as Alexander fought hard to beat his team mate, the first heat sore a thrilling finish as Alexander passed Lupton on the inside on the final lap, the huge crowd was on their feet as Annihilator 2 came in first place.

17th November 2004 - Annihilator Hydroplane Teams Head South
The Waverley Grand Prix Hydroplane based teams have been burning the midnight oil to get their boats ready for the South Island Championships to be held at Lake Dunstan Cromwell this weekend (20-21st) November.
Annihilator 2 has been fitted with a new F16 safety cell and has a new paint job. Australian Boat builder Tom Heffernan has spent many long hours getting this boat ready. Crew Chief Dick Corbett has taken care of maintenance duties on Annihilator 2&3. At the speeds these boats do they need to be continually checked safety is a major issue.
Top engine man Grant Rivers has fine tuned 5 Super Charge engines ready for the South island Champs. Saturday 20th the teams will have testing from 9am with the first heat of the South Island Grand Prix Championships scheduled for 12.30. Sunday will be two heats of the South Island Unlimited Unrestricted.
The teams will then move onto Invercargill the following weekend. The local club will be hosting a two day event on the Oreti River. As the river is too small for Grand Prix hydroplane Racing they will run demonstration laps one at a time.
It has been 15 years since Grand Prix Hydroplanes have competed on the Oreti River. Peter Knight Snr was the last GP Boat to compete in his conventional hydroplane The Boss. Lake Dunstan is a new venue for Speedboat Racing.
Results and Pictures will be posted as soon as possible here from this event.

12th November 2004 - Tragic accident kills champion boat racer
Larry Martin was tragically killed at Bundaberg on 6th November 2004.

RACE IN PEACE LARRY

Carol Draydon watched in horror as her fiancee, champion speedboat racer Larry Martin, was killed at the Bundy Thunder competition on Saturday. The 45-year-old's speedboat, Trojan, flipped and sank in front of a horrified crowd at Sandy Hook at 2.30pm. Mr Martin, from Tanawha on the Sunshine Coast, still had a faint heartbeat when his body was dragged from the water by rescue crews. He was rushed to Bundaberg Base Hospital, but died a short time later. Ms Draydon left Bundaberg soon after the accident. Debbie Brown, who had known Mr Martin for 18 years, was standing with his fiancee watching as Mr Martin was in fourth place in the 6L speedboat category. Larry came round a corner, something happened with the prop on the boat we think, it caused the boat to flip and Larry was killed, Mrs Brown said. His fiancee was in shock, very upset, it's a devastating thing. Mr Martin's best friend Phil Spencer, a Racers for Christ chaplin at the event, said the decision to continue racing yesterday was made by Mr Martin's fiancee. It was a decision of Carol, Larry's partner, and we believe it would be Larry's decision as well for us to continue, Mr Spencer said.
Bundy Thunder spectators raised $2500 for Mr Martin yesterday while Wide Bay Australia donated a further $5000. Mr Martin had 15 years experience racing speedboats and had won events around the country. He was very safety conscious, but his time was up, Mrs Brown said. Safety is always a concern, but you follow the rules and take all the safety precautions that's all you can do. Bundy Thunder chairman and Burnett Shire Mayor Ray Duffy said it was the first known death during speedboat racing at Sandy Hook. It's a perfect circuit so they can push their machines to the limit, but serious injuries are rare, Cr Duffy said. Event co-ordinator Peter Hurren said the accident would be investigated
By Michael Secomb

On behalf of the New Zealand Grand Prix Hydroplane Drivers Club and All members of the Boating Community throughout New Zealand we would like to express our condolences to Carol Draydon, the Family of Larry Martin and to all His friends for this unfortunate Accident.
