August 2005 - Strong Result for the SsangYong F1 Powerboat Race Team on
the Gold Coast
We thought you might
all enjoy reading this rom Craig Bailey who competed in the same F1 Superboat
race as KIWI Malcolm Jamieson in his KRB F1 Tunnel.
These Races are also broadcast on Sky TV here at some point in the next
few weeks I will try to find out when.

Qualifying
The 6th round of the FPS F1 Superboat Series on the beautiful Gold Coast
was greeted by testing conditions for the drivers today. Strong winds
were blowing down the course for the first session, catching out Tasmanian
driver, Todd Leary.
Leary barrel rolled his boat on the top turn, completely tearing off his
right hand sponson and damaging the drivers cell. He was ok but is out
for the weekend.
Craig Bailey declared himself happy with the setup and changes he had
made to the SsangYong F1 boat for this weekend.
"We had tested during the week in Sydney and I had moved some weight around
in the boat to try and improve the balance" said Bailey.
Bailey went out to test the conditions, completing 6 cautious laps before
returning to make some changes to the trim settings.
" The trim was running a bit quick" commented Bailey" we changed pumps
for the 2nd session and it seemed ok"
Crew chief, Jason Chiswell readjusted the engine setting as well resulting
in 2nd fastest time behind series leader, David Trask. A 34.6 to a 34.8sec
lap in front of Jon Tscaccounis (3rd) and Shane Vella in 4th.
Bob Trask was debuting his new GTR05 design, a full composite boat built
in their Brisbane workshops, he was 5th fastest.
"Tomorrow are the hot laps in the morning for the all important pole positions,
we need to get in the top 3 for a good result in Race 1 I think."
Racing starts at 10.00am at the Spit just next to Seaworld..
Raceday
Perfect condition greeted the drivers on race morning, the only concern
being the rollers that were coming onto the racecourse from pleasure boats
heading out for the day out in the channel.
Hot laps saw the team score a disappointing 7th position, some 3 seconds
behind pole sitter David Trask in the TDC DAC Boat.
"I was setting the boat for the southern turn at full noise, I guess that
would be close to 230kph on this course and I got messed up due to a few
waves in the wrong spot" said Bailey" I could have tried to turn the boat
in on them, but I am still not confident enough in the new boat. I could
have ended up with a pile of firewood right there, so I backed off. We'll
aim for a good start and see what happens".
Race 1
Was a cracker with Dave Trask and NZ champion, Malcom Jamieson who had
qualified 2nd, jumping off the start and leading the field into turn 1.
Bailey worked his way through the field to 4th, behind Shane Vella who
had his composite Seebold boat back from being repaired in the states.
Bailey eventually got past Vella whilst lapping some of the backmarkers,
but it was too late to chase down the leaders. A fantastic battle was
on with Dave Trask doing his best to hold off the charging Kiwi. Trask
took the win as he set about racking up the points in his quest for a
series championship.
The SsangYong team got a 3rd which meant the all important advantage of
a good grid position for the 15 lap race 2.
In Race 2
It was neck and neck with about 5 boats vying for the lead into turn 1.
Again it was Trask with Craig neck and neck with Jamieson. Bailey had
the run down the outside and did get in front of the Anglomoil sponsored
KRB boat of Jamieson. A great crowd were watching, both from the bank
and those moored on the outside of the course in pleasure boats, as again
Bailey had to give way to the flying kiwi who took a tighter line on the
bottom turn to retake 2nd and head out after Trask. Bailey was able to
stay in a solid 3rd, ,chasing all the way and holding off Bob Trask who
seemed to be just off the pace this weekend. Also one to watch had been
local driver, Craig Truslove in the FPS sponsored boat, who was putting
in some quick laps.
The SsangYong boat got another 3rd, but again, we were learning more and
more about the setup and handling characteristics. The final was going
to be interesting.
"The boat is fast, no doubt about it" Craig said after race 2. "I have
speed to burn, but I just can't seem to get through the rougher turns
like the DAC and the KRB boats. They have been designed for the rougher
European conditions and I just need a bit more time to turn in the sloppy
water as hard as they do".
In race 3
Bailey got a great start and had a slight advantage over Jamieson into
turn 1. It was Trask in front, but only just, as Craig let the boat fly
all the way down the front straight. Neck and neck for about 5 laps as
Trask held only a slight advantage as jamieson decided to make it a 3
way tussle, searching for a way past the SsangYong boat.
Eventually it was to be Jamieson's downfall, burying the nose of the boat
on the rough bottom turn trying to go up the inside of Bailey. It blew
the cowel off and sent water into the engine, stopping it straight away.
That was the kiwi challenge over and officials decided to bring out the
paceboat as he began to drift into the path of oncoming boats.
On the restart it was Trask who got the jump and let his engine have everything
it had for the final 6 lap run to the flag. Bailey settled for 2nd and
Bob Trask rounded out the 3.
Final results were:
1st Dave Trask - TDC/DAC
2nd Craig Bailey - SsangYong/Extreme F1
3rd Bob Trask - TDC/GTR 05

"I'm happy" said Bailey, "it was our 2nd race and I'm really starting
to understand what the boat is going to do a lot better. I was able to
go with Dave in the last race, who knows what may have happened if there
wasn't a race stoppage. Full credit to him though, he was the fastest
guy out there today. Our boys have all worked so hard to get us here and
competitive, I really have to thank them all. It was a team effort this
weekend"
"I'm already fired up for the final round in Penrith. We'll make a few
more changes and try and go for a win"

Jean Theoret driving
the "U-8 Llumar Window Film" had an unfortunate accident at the Chrysler
Jeep Superstores ABRA Gold Cup meeting in Detroit over the weekend.
Jean was clearly the Favorite Driver/Boat combination during the event
winning the first 3 heats of the meeting, but in heat 4 his boat hit a
Buoy and disappeared into the rooster tail of Jimmy King in the "U-3 Miss
Chrysler Jeep" The resulting damage was the loss of the right hand Sponson
which put the boat out of the Final.
The crew of the "U-8 Llumar Window Film" will be working hard to try and
get the boat ready for the next meeting at Tri-Cities in just two weeks
time.

at the first weekend at Taree.
This Boat was originally called "Scorpio" a USA Lauterbach Boat which
eventually was purchased by The Great Peter Knight Sr in New Zealand.
The Knights then set up the Boat for Gina Campbell to break the Women's
Water speed Record and was then sold to Australia a couple of years ago
where it went a full ground up rebuild and is looking and running very
well in the hands of Graham Coddington

The Support Classes
on the first weekend were well supported by the many different Hydroplanes
that showed up. We first meet Bob Miller and Longshot above at a service
station just outside Newcastle on our way to Taree. He was helpful with
directions and came up for the second weekend to watch as well.
Impatient was a very tidy looking Red Hydro which I think had Propeller
problems in his first race.

2nd "GP55" Paul Cunningham, Time 3.16.84 Fastest Lap = 46.26

already won the Championship
Heat 6B
1st "Annihilator 3" Ken Lupton, Time 3.16.04 Fastest Lap = 48.73
2nd "Dragula" Tom Heffernan, Time 3.33.02 Fastest Lap = 48.25
("Annihilator 1 & 2" were unable to Start with broken engines)
Ken and Tom went out hard for the first few laps and it was a great battle
however Tom noticed that Dragula had a problem at the rear of the Boat
and backed off on the last turn he almost lost all control of the rudder
and limped over the line.
Tom Heffernan and the Dragula Team can be proud of their results they
race on a budget with just one engine which is not as powerful as the
other big Boats. That they finished all the races is an achievement to
their dedication and commitment to the Boat.
Congratulations on a well deserved third place.

2nd "GP55" Paul Cunningham, Time 3.10.47 Fastest Lap = 46.26
3rd "Dragula" Tom Heffernan, Time 3.25.88 Fastest Lap = 49.97
This was the race of the meeting so far with Dragula finishing in third.
The race however for 1st was the closest there has been for some time
and it was unclear at the line who had won. In the Pits Ken was confident
he had done enough to cross the line first. A photo finish was what was
needed to pick them and it turned out that Ken won by just a Fraction
of a second. The crowd gave both Paul Cunningham "GP55" and Ken Lupton
"Annihilator 3" a standing ovation on the warm down Lap.
Heat 5B
1st "Warlord" Paul Burton, Time 2.53.73 Fastest Lap 41.70
DNF "Annihilator 2" David Alexander, (broke on first corner)
DNF "Annihilator 1" Warwick Lupton, (Broke before the Start Flag dropped)
Drama at the start as Warwick Lupton Broke the Engine going to the start
line and was left stranded just past the top turn. The flag dropped and
David and Paul Burton went hell for leather into the First turn only for
Warlord to emerge leaving a stranded "Annihilator 2" in the water with
Flames once more coming out from the right hand side. Warlord was left
to run on his own and set about doing the fastest lap of the meeting and
the fastest overall time to boot.
Unofficially Paul Cunningham "GP55" has won the World Title with a Round
to go.

Warwick took the jump and powered away from a hard charging Paul Burton
and Dragula ever Mr Consistent kept a close watch in Third Place. After
2 Laps it was clear that Warwick had a problem and was slowing. The Engine
Let Go on the last corner which allowed Warlord to take the win from Dragula
Heat 4B
1st "GP55" Paul Cunningham, Time 3.02.13 Fastest Lap = 44.65
DNF "Annihilator 3" Ken Lupton, Fastest Lap = 46.87
DNF "Annihilator 2" David Alexander, Fastest Lap = 47.68
A Great Start with all 3 boats close together and not giving any more
room than necessary. GP55 got the lead coming out of the first Turn and
started to pull away. Ken had some rough water in the first turn and lost
ground but was charging hard in third. At Lap 2 David came to a stop with
a Engine Fire. David thought it best to abandon ship at this point and
leapt into the water, a brave effort for a man who is not a good swimmer
however the water was only Knee Deep.
All up a very Disappointing Round for the New Zealand Team and they really
need some miracles to take the title Now.

Ken Warby managed to
get onto the water to do a few runs up and down including one pass under
the bridge. Their was a lot of Media at this Run with Cameras and TV crews
popping up everywhere. He didn't do to much of a Flame out the back and
I was rather disappointed that this was the best Flame he produced.
Dragula had nothing more to prove so left the Boat on the Trailer.
GP55 got their Pipes Welded by a Local and went back out to test for 3
laps.
Annihilator 1 broke a Blower belt but changed it and went out and ran
well.
Annihilator 2 Had a good clean Run and the Repairs haven't affected the
boats handling at all.
Annihilator 3 Had a couple of short runs and the crew worked on the prop
shaft.
Rain caused many delays and the Juniors had quite a few races.
25th
June 2005 1.50pm Aussie Time - World Champs

Its rained off and
on all day so far the GP Boats didn't hit the water until 12.30pm. Warlord
has not shown as he is waiting for glue to dry on the boat.
Annihilator 2 is yet to hit the water but is ready to Go.
The Wasp Is a no Show.
Tattoo was DQ by the UIM
Dragula ran very well
GP55 had to stop on his third practice lap when one of the right hand
side Pipes fell off.
Ken Warby will do a run at 3pm should be Good.
There are more Juniors here than Displacement Boats.
Fury, Melodee, Bellaterra, Eliminator, Bring it On, Truly Wicked, Noise
Works, and Jail Break are the only Displacement Boats here
25th

needed so it may just be a further test session.

June 2005 9.15am Aussie Time - World Championships

The weekend was action packed at Taree with all the boats having spins
or engine damage. Its fair to say that next weekend the title is wide
open with "GP55" having a slim Margin that can be wiped out with just
1 DNF. The "Warlord" team will hopefully be able to repair the Boat the
Damage to the outside of the boat is only Minor but they have some big
Damage to the Inside Rear of the Boat that is causing concern.
The Annihilator Team will be hard at it Repairing David's"Annihilator
2" Boat and will fly Tom Heffernan back to Taree Early in the week to
help out. The Annihilator Team Appreciates the Effort that Tom Puts in
to Repair the Boats.

The Big News is that Ricky Howard in "Hyper Active" is out of the event
the Boats damage in the Pictures was Superficial but the real damage is
to the Transom when the steering wires let go at the front of the Boat
the Rudder went loose and put the Boat into a Flat Spin. This caused damage
to the Transom and Ricky stated that time and Money were against a Repair
at this stage.
Matt Ferris in "Tattoo" put up his tie in qualifying but had a loss of
oil pressure and upon removing the Oil Filter they discover bits of the
Main Bearing. So "Tattoo" is out of Sundays racing but the question of
is eligibility will still be asked as Matt intends to try and make repairs
for next weekend.
The Hot Laps were run in this order with there times listed.
"Tattoo" 49.01 (now out due to Main Bearing failure)
"Warlord" 40.61
"Annihilator 2" No Time (had a miss fire and called it off)

"Dragula" 45.43
"Annihilator 3" No Time (Broke a Blower Belt)
"GP55" 44.19
"Hyper Active" Did not Start due to Damage

June 2005 2.30pm Australian Time - World Championships

Ricky Howard and "Hyper Active" has had an Incident during practice when
his steering cables broke and his Boat went into a spin.
Damage was suffered to the front right of the Boat as can be seen in the
pictures. It is hoped that repairs can be made overnight to the Boat

"Dragula" also had a Spin during practice but he suffered no damage and
managed to restart and head back to the pit area.
Sorry I tried to do this update at Race control but the phone lines wouldn't
allow it. I then tried in the Bar but still no Luck. Works great in the
Motel so I will have to get a lot of walking in Tomorrow.
18th
June 2005 10am Australian Time - World Championships

Matt Ferris showed up this morning with "Tattoo" has he was unable to
complete "Miss Tattoo" on time. There was plenty of debate in the meetings
with officials as to the Boats eligibility. The situation now is that
the Boat will race this weekend and the UIM will be asked to decide on
weather the Boat is Official or not there ruling will stand.
So for now good luck to Matt Ferris
Ricky Howard and "Hyper Active" has been having issues with the Motor
and will just try to get through the weekend as best as possible.
Bobby Fisher and "Wasp" are still flat out working on the Boat having
taken out the Motor and reinstalled it over night they are still at home
trying to get the Boat Running. They hope to be hear tomorrow.
Hot laps will run today the fastest times get pole for the heats.
The Points for the Heats are worked out that each heat all boats are timed
for the whole run at the end of each round of heats all the boats times
are listed and the fastest Boat gets the 400 points for the win and so
on down the list.

Ken Lupton is running a new Blower and has an Increase in Horse Power
for these Championships. Hopefully we will see some Good things from the
Boat during Practice.
there will be practice now and then Lunch and a further practice at about
2pm the Hot laps will run so I hope to update then.

We arrived in Taree around 3pm and set about settling in and learning
the course and and getting our Bearings. The above image is the view from
our Motel the Jolly Swagman, its right on the edge of the course and a
stones throw from the GP Pit area.
Should be no excuses for not updating the site as its a short stroll to
my room and I can also set up a camp at Race control
The Rumours in the Pub are that Matt Ferris "Miss Tattoo" hasn't made
it to Taree and Bobby Fisher "Wasp" is still flat out working on getting
his boat ready and wont be on the water until Sunday at the earliest.
We should have more news after the various meetings going on Now with
the Officials and tomorrow with the Drivers.

Unofficial Entries
for the World Championship being raced at Taree, NSW, Australia.
At the Moment there are 10 boats listed on the Taree
Website. Matt Ferris has entered both "Tattoo" his Tunnel Boat and
"Miss Tattoo" A Grand Prix Hydroplane that he hopes to have Ready. There's
ben plenty of debate as to weather "Tattoo" is actually eligible to be
classed as a Grand Prix Hydro. Personally I hope he has the GP boat up
and running as that would remove any doubts and the Championship needs
a competitor like Matt. We would also love to see Matt racing in New Zealand
at some stage in the future.
Bobby Fisher "Wasp" is listed on the Taree
Website. as having a new Boat.
Grant Harrison said at the Griffiths Cup he would not be racing as GP101
was beyond repair. its unknown how far along the New Grant Rollerson built
Boat "Spellbound" was from completion at this stage.
