30th November 2005 - Freestyle Sports Open

If you are looking for exciting action-packed family entertainment this summer the Freestyle Sports Open at Lake Karapiro Domain on 6th - 7th January 2006 could be just the thing.
There will be a feast of World-class competition in freestyle Moto-X, skateboarding, wakeboarding and BMX over the two days, including scintillating record-breaking attempts in the various disciplines.

Event organizer Lawrence Perkins says this will be some of the best action of its type the country has ever seen. "We have world champions and NZ and Australian record holders getting amongst it in every event," he says. "The whole event is co-ordinated so that there is no time for spectators to get bored – we have choreographed the action so one event will lead straight into another without the waiting that often accompanies multi-discipline sports entertainment events".

Of particular interest will be NZ and Australia’s top FMX riders back-flipping their bikes, a first in NZ for a competition event of this sort. Amongst those riders attempting the back flip will be two New Zealand riders doing the manoeuvre in New Zealand for the first time in an event.

The country’s top skateboarders will be competing on an international quality skate park at the domain. The skate park will also be incorporated into part of the BMX competition as well as a purpose built BMX dirt jump course.
The wakeboarding sees top NZ and world championship wakeboarders throwing tantrums and spins and will incorporate a spectacular slider course and wake skating. And if that’s not enough to wet your appetite, the two days will also give spectators the chance to experience up-close jet ski demonstrations as well as,

Grand Prix Hydroplane Boat Racing
Featuring Warwick Lupton "Annihilator", David Alexander "Annihilator 2" & Ken Lupton "Annihilator 3"

and also snowboarding rail demo, mountain bike jumping, pit bike back-flips as well as an expo of wakeboards, BMX and mountain bikes, boats and motorbikes, both on display and for sale.

This family - friendly event is alcohol and drug-free.
Admission for the day is
$20 per adult
$10 for under 15 year olds
and under fives are free.
Family passes are $50 for a family of two adults and two children.

The events run from 10am - 4pm each day.

29th November 2005 - Team Finish off the season with a Win!

The Ssang Yong Team capped off a successful 2005 season with an overall win at the final round of the FPS F1 Superboat Series at Penrith, just outside Sydney, on Sunday. However it was almost a disaster as tangling with Dave Trask in the final race of the day put a hole in the boat that was taking in water.
The weekend started well with Bailey first into the 36sec mark, well clear of the Trask brothers, Rhys Coles, vella and the Kiwi, Malcom Jamieson during Saturday’s practice. Coles later matched Bailey’s time late in the day but the team had declared themselves happy with the setup and elected to not run in the final session.
“Running at Melton, the weekend prior was the difference” said Bailey. I didn’t have to get into the groove, the team all new exactly what was needed to be done and we had tested a variety of setups. Actually it was fun, I am getting to know the boat and was able to really fly it out of the turns”.
Perfect conditions on the Saturday turned ugly for Sunday’s raceday with heavy showers scheduled all day.
In qualifying the team finished in 3rd, though the onboard telemetry showed a different time to that of the officials, but, Craig still felt with the a good start he would be able to challenge Dave Trask and Coles who were 2nd and 1st respectively. Dave had just come back from a fine 5th place finish at the previous World Championship round in Qatar and was brimming with confidence.
It was a tight tussle right from the start with both Bailey and Trask eventually getting past Coles to go 1st and 2nd the whole way. The Ssang Yong boat had the legs but Trask was driving well to hold his position.
It was the same story in race 2 as both drivers soon lapped slower traffic during another close fought contest. Again Trask took the chequered flag from Bailey as both teams prepared for the final.
It was on from the start as Bailey knew he needed to make his move early if he was to get the prized inside line on the tight Penrith course. Side by side early on in the race Bailey moved up along side Trask and got his nose in front, both drivers probably doing close on 135mph. Bailey was wide out the turn and trask started to drift wide as well, 2 doesn’t go into one and next thing both boat collided.
‘ All I remember was the sight of Dave’s boat climbing up the decks and near my windscreen, it happened so fast. He had to stop which was unfortunate, I would have liked to race him the whole way. We holed the boat and took on water, I thought something wasn’t right as the boat kept getting slower and slower.
Bob Trask got me on the last corner, I knew I had the overall points for the day so I let him through, it would have been nice to have won the heat though”.
The win capped off a good 2nd half to the year for the team. The new boat is finally getting sorted and the team will be keen to run for the championship next year.
“A 2nd at the Gold Coast round, winning the Arch Spooner and a win here at Penrith is great. It is a credit to all of my team, especially my crew chief Jason, whose wife is expecting their 2nd child soon. Also to all of our sponsors for the year, thanks very much, I hope to have a few drinks before Christmas with everyone and hopefully we can all go for a championship next year.”

27th November 2005 - World Jet Sprints

Duncan Wilson & Willie Parsons in Fully Loaded

Wanganui played Host to the second and final round of the UIM World Jet Sprint Championships.
A huge crowd turned out in very changeable weather conditions with snow about the only thing Mother Nature didn't throw at us.
The racing was good with only a few minor spills.

Group A was won by Slade Stanley of Australia in "As U Do" and with it Slade became UIM 2005 World Champion.

Superboat was won by Peter Briant of New Zealand in "New Zealand Seafood's" but that meant he was then equal on points with Rodney Pohio in "Hydraulink" so they then had another runoff to determine the 2005 UIM World Champion which was won by Peter Briant.

23rd November 2005 - Craig Bailey becomes 1st Driver to win 8 Arch Spooner Gold Cups
Last weekend the boys drove down to Melbourne to try and win the coverted APBA Arch Spooner Gold cup for the 8th time and become the 1st driver to do so. Prior to the weekend, Bailey jointly held 7 wins with Australian driving legend, Bob Halliday who first started winning in the mid 1970’s.
Luck was down in the first heat with local driver Gavin Bricker taking the win from Bailey, but the team kept their cool, made a few changes and went out to win the next 2 heats to take the overall win and the trophy.
“It was a great weekend for the team” said Craig afterwards “ we actually had 2 objectives, the first being to win the Arch Spooner, it has some of the greatest names in Australian powerboat racing on it and I am honored everytime I add my name to it.”
“Our second objective was to fine tune the boat for this weekend’s final round of the FPS F1 Superboat Series at Penrith just outside Sydney. The competition is hot up front and Dave Trask has been really quick. He just got 5th at the Qatar round of the World Championships last weekend so I guess his confidence will be up. The Ssang Yong boat is running well though, I’m very happy so we should do ok.”
Bailey is out of the running of the overall championship after missing the first half of the season.
He also took some time out recently to wed his longtime girlfriend Janelle on Byron Bay Beach. It was a big day (weekend) for all with many guests coming from overseas including former F1 powerboat star, Pelle Brolin from Sweden and top engine man, Ron Anderson and his wife Lynne from the US.
The stunning bride arrived in a brand new white Ssang Yong Rexton of course, courtesy of Ssang Yong Australia. Our thanks go to Chris Michel for organising that.
Stay tuned for all the results from the weekend and the launch of our brand new website www.craigbailey.com.au.

21st September 2005 - Garin Keane & "Too Keane"
TOO KEANE
FORMULA 3
BOAT RACING
Early in 2004, late into our boat-racing season, I started my hobby as a powerboat driver. The boat I was using at the time was a hydroplane, a hull designed for straight-line speed but useless at turning. It was very different from the conventional boats seen around. Most hydroplanes we see are inboard. Mine was an outboard. Instead of a seat, all I had was soft padding, on which I knelt. I had what was known as a kneel-down outboard hydroplane, the last one still racing in New Zealand.

It was one of the worst things I could have started in, but I enjoyed it immensely, had some wonderful races in it, and won some trophies. A few meetings in, I had an accident. The lower unit fell off the engine, and into the murky depths of Lake D. For a time, I had to give up my newly acquired hobby, and sit on the side line. We soon acquired another hull for me, but it needed a lot of work, and would still be useless with out the lower unit. After a few attempts, and a full day searching with a metal detector, and diving, we managed to retrieve the lower unit. Work on the new hull continued slowly, and I endured a whole season as a spectator.

During the off-season, I received a surprise from Kevin Thorburn, a fellow driver and a man I have great respect for. He had got his hands on another hull for me. This hull was considered perfect, but needed a lot of work. So with the great help of my father, John Keane, Kevin Thorburn, and Tombo Needham, our boat builder, we sanded, repaired and under-coated the hull, this took 12 weeks of work.

We then took it to CTB panelbeaters and car painters for painting. Colin, the owner of the business, said it would be done for us free of charge. For this I give him and his painter, Alan, great thanks - it came out from CTB looking fantastic – I think that it is the best looking tunnel hull on the circuit. From there, we rigged it up with engine, battery, fuel tank, wiring and the like, and took it off to Cannon Signage Concepts to have the sign writing put on. This was done sooner than expected, and was given to me as a birthday present. Cannon did a great job on TOO KEANE, and the signage has really made the boat come alive.

It was taken off to Lake D for testing, and went better than we thought it would. It rode perfectly on the water, when trimmed right. The first time I went out, I was told it rode nicely; all I needed to do was put my foot down a bit more. The second time I went out, I was told that it was riding far too high, and that I was lucky to survive. The last time, I was told it was perfect.

The next weekend was race day. We took it back to Lake D once again using a Ford Explorer to tow TOO KEANE. The Explorer is a very versatile vehicle, having up to seven comfortable seats or a large storage area, and having a towing capacity of almost 3,500 kg, it made easy work of towing TOO KEANE, even with plenty of parts and race equipment on board, there was room to spare and it was very comfortable. We gave everyone a large shock with our new and improved hull, quite different to what I was expected to have. Another new boat was there from Wellington, in the same class as mine, and was expected to do quite well. The first race I got a third and pursued this boat around the lake. The second, I won quite easily, as the boat from Wellington had stopped part way through the race. The third I won again with relative ease.

The last race that I competed in really showed what my boat could do. Both myself and the boat from Wellington were starting on the same time. I had decided to stay on the outside of him and let him go first, because this driver has more experience than me as he is now into his third season of racing, and I also wanted to see how ‘Too Keane’ would go from behind his boat. I soon found as I was taking off that his wasn’t going as well as mine was, so I decided to go for it. I sped past him, and with dad screaming through the walkie-talkie in my earpiece I beat him at the first turn. There was still another slower boat to overtake, but he was miles ahead of me. I managed to catch him up on the last corner, to give a spectacular three boat wide last turn. Out of good sportsmanship, I decided to give the win away to the slower new driver to the sport.

I want to thank everyone who has made it possible for me to compete in this wonderful sport; especially my father for his support and encouragement; Kevin Thorburn from Warkworth Motors for getting the hull and always being there to help; Tombo Needham our very talented boat builder, Colin from CTB Panelbeaters for the fantastic paint and finish; Cannon Smith from Cannon Signage Concepts for the awesome livery; and Ford Motor Company for making it possible for us to get to race meetings by providing a wonderful vehicle to tow "TOO KEANE".

I look forward to the next meeting, as it will be a long course, with higher top speeds and it will be good to see how we go. I will keep you informed.
Thank you,
Garin Keane
